Every art has its own tasks, resolved only by it, by this one art. Thus, a painting depicting a landscape can convey to me what it has to say, only by depicting water, bushes, fields, distance, sky, and no poetry or music will convey what the painter has to tell me. So it is in all the arts, and especially in music, the most intimate, that is, the most other art that takes possession of the people. Music, if it is music, has something to say that can only be expressed by music. And this expression of musical thought, rather content, has its own musical laws, its beginning, middle, end. In the same way as an architectural, pictorial, poetic work. And when a musician has something to say with his art, music complies with these conditions, as it always has been and is from ancient times to the present.
